Congratulations to Alyssa McRoberts and Madison Taylor, the Two Mount St. Joseph University Art & Design Student Winners of the Ohio Art Education Foundation Scholarships!
The Ohio Art Education Foundation Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate art education students who are pursuing licensure. They must be a full-time student in the 2023-2024 school year enrolled as a third-year, fourth-year, or graduate student. Applicants responded to this essay prompt, “Based on the current theme of the 2023 Conference, Glass City Lights write an essay about how OAEA’s mission of professional growth and leadership can play a role in your future teaching and breaking the glass ceiling. What opportunities and challenges might you encounter being a part of OAEA and its mission?” Applicants also shared their teaching philosophy, a digital portfolio, their resume, and two letters of support. There was a tie for first place this year so each awardee receives a $2,000 scholarship.
The Mount is proud to announce that out of the four different universities competing for the OAEA Scholarship, two of our Art & Design students placed so well and had judges’ scores so close that both Alyssa McRoberts and Madison Taylor were awarded first place OAEA Scholarship winners! This is a huge feat and a testament to the great Art & Design Program at the Mount and the quality of students at the university.
Michaelann Kelley, Ed. D., is the Chair and Assistant Professor of Art and Design at MSJ. She had the honor of announcing the two MSJ Art & Design student winners of the OAEA Scholarships. Read below for snippets of Michaelann Kelley’s speech from the award ceremony.
“Our first award is Alyssa McRoberts from Mount St. Joseph University. Alyssa wrote in her teaching philosophy that ‘Collaboration with the whole school community will be essential to help my students develop their creative problem-solving skills while providing a safe, encouraging atmosphere for everyone.’ The prompt for the scholarship essay was about breaking the glass ceiling she wrote about the many women associated with the Ohio Art Education Association in leadership roles which will allow her to follow in their footsteps as an art education leader.” (Michaelann Kelley)
“Our second scholarship awardee is Madison Taylor from Mount St. Joseph University. Maddie wrote in her teaching philosophy that, ‘I think there is no greater joy than seeing a student begin their own exploration of ideas and innovation.” Maddie responded to the essay prompt on breaking the glass ceiling as a responsibility as an educator. She wrote, “As a teacher and mentor, it will be my responsibility to help prepare my students for challenges, to inspire them to create change, and to motivate them to be barrier breakers.’” (Michaelann Kelley)
