A major in Biology blends knowledge of basic scientific processes with an appreciation of the phenomenon of life.

State-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation provide unique research opportunities not typically found in a smaller college setting. The program prepares you to enter graduate or professional school to pursue scientific research, medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, nursing, and veterinary medicine, or seek employment in the biological sciences directly after graduation.

Why Biology at the Mount?

  Featured Courses:

As a biology major you work with an advisor to plan a schedule of courses in biology and other natural sciences appropriate for your plans and interests. Some of these subjects are:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Cell Biology
  • Ecology
  • Biotechnology
  • Entomology
  • Evolution
  • Genetics
  • Microbiology
  • Biological Psychology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Animal Behavior
  • Advanced Anatomy
  • Aquatic Biology
  • Immunology
  • Biological Forensics
  Career Future:

Take your Bachelor of Science in Biology degree and pursue additional studies to become a physician, geneticist, forensic scientist, developmental or cell biologist, entomologist, public health expert, veterinarian or physical therapist. Other graduates seek employment directly after graduation as a:

  • Environmental educator
  • High school biology teacher
  • Laboratory director in research and development
  • Research scientist (industry, medicine, natural science)

Hannah Morgan, a proud 2023 graduate, is making a significant impact at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Her journey began at the Mount, where she pursued a major in Biology and a minor in Psychology. Now, as a Clinical Microbiology Lab Technologist in the Diagnostic Infectious Disease Testing Laboratory, she plays a crucial role in analyzing clinical specimens, helping doctors make informed decisions about patient care. Hannah’s passion for science is now transforming into tangible results that directly benefit young patients.

When not in the lab, you’ll find her racing for the Fleet Feet Racing Team in Cincinnati or giving back to her community by volunteering with a local high school cross-country team.

Hannah Morgan - Mount St. Joseph University – B.S. Biology ‘23 Clinical Microbiology Lab Technologis at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

Since graduating from Mount St. Joseph University, Nick has navigated a winding road through academia and industry across seven states before finding his place at the intersection of bioinformatics, immunology, and neuroscience. Along the way, he earned an MS in Entomology (Purdue University) and a PhD in Biological Sciences (University of Notre Dame) focused on tropical infectious diseases.

Now working remotely and settled in a quiet village in the White Mountains of New England (where even Delhi feels like a metropolis!), he's built an accomplished career using big data to answer questions at the molecular level, and helping turn complex biological puzzles into real-world medical breakthroughs.

Hands-On Learning:

Biology students hold co-op positions in research and diagnostic laboratories, product manufacturing and testing, zoos, museums, hospitals, physical therapy clinics, rehabilitation facilities, non-profits, and aquaria. Students may engage in individualized research with a faculty mentor or participate in an internship experience in an off-campus research program. Student research projects have culminated in publications and award-winning presentations at regional and national conferences.

Qualified students are eligible for membership in Beta Beta Beta, the Xi Gamma Chapter of the National Biology Honor Society. Members participate in regional and national research symposia that will strengthen their learning.
